"English Gardens - Texas Style"

The following are a sampling of what you will see on your visit:

  •  Perennial & Antique Rose Garden & Lily Pond:  Completed in the early 1940's.  Original water lilies have flourished here for approximately 40 years. This garden was the original rose garden -hybrid teas that long since died.  Garden has been rehabilitated to include hardy antique roses and acclimated perennial plants.

  •  Arbor & Refreshment Area:  Completed in 1933.  Leon Bandy personally built this arbor.  As a result of his not being a skilled mason, this arbor is starting to show wear and tear.  The wood superstructure will be rebuilt in the near future and the surrounding gardens replanted.  Vases and sundial are original accessories.

  •  Waterfall - Perennial Garden - Lily Pond:  This irregular pond was built in the early 1930's.  Amazingly, it does not leak as it is a concrete pond.  A stone boulder coping was added in May 1992 to conceal the unattractive concrete edge.  A waterfall, a connecting stream bed and an upper retention pond were constructed in the summer of 1991.  Native rock to match the property's existing stone was secured from a quarry two miles east of here.  The new pond and stream bed were built using a flexible, vinyl liner.

The garden was designed and installed in the summer of 1992.  A mixed planting showing shade and sun tolerant plants; it illustrates Xeriscape landscaping, foliage, textural and color usage. The waterfalls and upper pond are illuminated for night viewing.
