Scented flowers, which appear in spring only, are large, single, creamy white and have prominent yellow stamens. Very bristly, oval to pear-shaped, orange hips follow the flowers but quickly change to brown with age. This species has naturalized itself in several southern states. 'Cherokee' is native to southern China and Taiwan. It was first botanically described from a specimen growing in Georgia, and is their state flower.
